What the right to roam covers
Walking, running, watching wildlife and climbing, on foot.
The right to roam does not cover cycling or driving, horse riding or bringing any animal except a dog, camping, fires, metal detecting, organised games, hang-gliding or paragliding, swimming or boating in non-tidal water, or anything done for a business. A bridleway or byway across the land, the landowner's permission or a local right may allow some of these.
Some land stays private even where the map shades it: buildings and the land around them, anywhere within 20 metres of a house, parks and gardens, quarries, railways, golf courses, racecourses and airfields, and land ploughed or sown in the last 12 months.
A closure or restriction on access land does not close a public footpath or bridleway across it.
Some commons have public access under another law instead (section 15 land), where these rules do not apply; their own pages say which.
